Hankering for Yarn

Wedding Shawls: Crocheted or knitted?

by Noreen on July 3rd, 2006

My daughter is getting married next year

(to a wonderful guy).

So………

we are starting to have conversations about the wedding.

Like:

“Can I crochet the Butterfly shawl for you for your wedding?”

So far, the answer is, “No”.

Sigh.

What’s the Butterfly Shawl?

It’s a shawl that I designed for Knit1 magazine.

Here I am holding it up on a frosty day last February, before I shipped it off to my editor.

The reason why I took it outside, was because we were having the most incredible frosts, and it looked to me that the frost on the trees was what had originally inspired people to make lace.

Mother Nature was the first lacemaker.

It’s in their Summer 2006 issue:

I absolutely LOVE the way they photographed it:

Gorgeous.

I love it, and think it would be wonderful for a bride’s shawl.

But………

my daughter says:

‘Knitted’.

and, “A stole, not a shawl.”

So.

Knitted it will be.

I am going to be spinning the silk for it, so I think that I had better get started.

I’ve already written about my favorite supported spindle…. theĀ  Royale Hare. It’s my most fave spindle for spinning silk. I think it’s going to be one very whirly little twirlie over the next few months!

I guess I’d better find out what kind of imagery my daughter wants me to design into the shawl. Not a bad idea to start working on the charts!

By the way, I won’t be getting the Butterfly shawl back.

Too bad.

My Mom would love it!

and so would I…………

Oh yes, the pattern is ~in~ the magazine.

Their website is www.knit1mag.com

It’s a great little magazine. You should pick it up!
hugs all round,

Noreen

Oh Noreenie, I have the Knit1 magazine. Your shawl is gorgeous!!! It is such a bummer that you will not get it back. I am certain that whatever you design for your daughter’s wedding will amazing! Can’t wait to see it! :o)

Thank you so much Garnet! It would have been lovely to have the shawl returned, but, alas, this is not how it works!
I need more hours in the day, so I can make myself one and maybe one for my mom, too! LOL!
    hugs!

Noreen, the butterflies are beautiful. Let us know how the knit stole comes out. Are you going to do something using the stitches from Shetland Lace patterns, or creating from scratch?

    Hi Lessie
Well, actually, my daughter has had a change of heart and has decided that the shawl will work for her! I am so pleased! I’ve ordered the silk bricks to start the spinning…..
    will keep you updated!

oh, by the way, I would have designed my own lace for the knitted stole.

[…] Oh yeah, the designer of the shawl, Noreen Crone-Findlay, found out about our little CAL with one of her designs and she has joined our CAL! She is spinning her own silk to make the yarn for this shawl. She is making the shawl for her daughter as part of her wedding. Read all about it in this post and you can read more about (and see more pics of it) in this post! (You can also see the pic of her with the shawl she made for Knit.1 magazine.) Her blog is called Hankering for Yarn. Cute huh! […]
