Hankering for Yarn

Weaving Peace on Salt Spring Island, BC

by Noreen on July 24th, 2007

Oh Wow!

this just in from my best friend, Terri:

ISLAND OBSERVANCE HAS SPECIAL LINK TO HIROSHIMA

Salt Spring’s 2007 commemoration of Hiroshima Day has a special link to the Japanese city of Hiroshima:  A banner woven in our community will be part of the annual observance  in that city.  The local event is scheduled for Monday, August 6, at 7:30 PM in the Peace Park across from Artspring in Ganges.

Terri Bibby, an island web design artist and weaver, was invited to contribute a banner that would be part of the world-scope observance in the city devastated byy the atomic bomb in 1947.  Terri set up her loom at various sites on the island last spring and invited all comers to weave part of the banner.  Her invitation brought enthusiastic response from 150 people.  Terri delivered the finished weaving to Hiroshima in person in early July.  She will be guest speaker at our event to recount the full story of the undertaking.

Also speaking will be Taania Aguila, one of our peace activists who is working intensively through Acts of Transformation.  This  work grew out of the International Peace Forum held in Vancouver last year.  It accentuates educating children to spread the message of peace through cultural means.  Sue Newman will be mistress of ceremonies and lead those present in singing.  Some trenchant songs by the Raging Grannies are also on the program.  A letter that attendees may sign, will be available.  Members of the Japanese Garden Society will display the proposed scheme for creating a Reconciliation Garden in the Peace Park.

The evening will conclude with a lantern procession.  One and all are invited to a lantern-creating workshop during the day from 10 AM to 2 PM.  Materials will be furnished though donations are welcome.  To avoid fire hazard, the illumination in the lanterns will be LED.

In case of rain, the ceremony will move to the Artspring foyer.

Thank you Noreen. This journey of Peace Weaving has been very wonderful for me. I didn’t know where the threads might take me when I started.

I just heard this past weekend from Japan that they have received over 400 woven Peace Banners from around the world that will be displayed in the Peace Park in Hiroshima on August 6.

Then I just imagine how many people are weaving for peace….if the Salt Spring banner had 150 weavers * 400 banners ….. wow!

Thank you to all who are part of Weaving Peace in so many ways!

    Peace,
    Terri
