Weaving a wedding vest on narrow looms
Our daughter is getting married next September.
I am spinning silk and crocheting her the Butterfly shawl that I designed for the summer 2006 issue of Knit.1 magazine. I am also spinning and crocheting her a shrug for the wedding as well (for the supper and dance).
I’m spinning the yarn to make a shrug for myself, too….
(Not the same pattern as hers. I will be using the pattern that I designed for a book that will be released almost at the same time as her wedding :) )
And, I am now working on weaving some sample narrow bands to weave the vest for her sweetiepie.
Because I love making vests using narrow strips and bands, I asked if it would be okay to make the vest for our son-in-law’s wedding finery. Bless his heart, he said yes :)
Just like knitting and crocheting, swatching is important in weaving, too. By test driving some yarn and thread combinations in shorter bands, I’ll be sure to get it right when I start weaving yards of them for the actual vest.
I’ll be weaving most of the strips on my inkle loom, but I decided to whip up this combination using the Harrisville backstrap loom. It’s a nice little loom, and is quick as a wink to warp up and zip off whatever length band you want.
I think that the colors in this first band are a little dark, but that’s okay…….. lots of time to fine tune them!
This wedding is so much fun to be part of! I will be weaving Jim’s vest, too, and probably the fabric for his shirt. I think I should weave us each a hankie to sniff into as our beloved daughter marries this wonderful young man….. we’re shamelessly sentimental…….. and very happy about the man she has chosen to become our second son.
Ah, memories in the making, stitch by stitch……..
