Hankering for Yarn

Very Nifty Free Sock Pattern

by Adelle Tilton on December 29th, 2005

I am a sock nut. I love to find yarn for them, make them, wear them, give them as gifts… I just love the whole process. I like knitting with double-pointed needles, I like how easy it is to grab-and-go with them, and I like the almost instant gratification socks give a knitter. They are inexpensive (compared to a sweater) and just flat-out fun!

So I am always snooping for patterns. Free ones, ones to purchase, old ones, new ones… unique ones, of course! This pattern caught my eye because of the variety of sizes. Many people have problems with wearing socks because of having a need for larger or smaller sizes. This problem solves that as it comes in eight sizes!

I have some ideas for this pattern too. It is made with a self-striping yarn in just one or two balls, depending on the size and if you have contrasting heels and toes. I am a firm believer in buying one skein extra; you can always use the extra skein for darning or making a fun pair of socks of your sock yarn stash.

I suggest getting some of the Confetti yarn that is recommended for the project. I like the contrasting heel/toe pattern, and I say, play around with some unique colors. Make something different than anything you have or make a really special Valentine’s Day gift for your sweetie.

This yarn is a fingering weight (rated #1) so it knits up around 7-8 stitches per inch. It comes in colors that will stripe up wide but it also comes in 19 colors that are a great “fake out” for a fair isle look. I don’t know about you but I am not crazy about knitting fair isle. This way you can have the look but you don’t have to fuss with the technique. And it is a superwash wool so you get the warmth and breathability of wool, but you can pop them in the washer and dryer without hesitation.

The page I am sending you to for this free pattern, also has another stripe sock pattern, a pair of mittens, some fingerless gloves, and baby booties. The beauty of this yarn is that it will stripe up beautifully in anything. And no loose ends to weave in, which makes it nice to work on while traveling or while waiting for an appointment.

Besides, people will think you remarkably talented because you can manage four or five needles simultaneously. It is a good ego-booster for something that isn’t that hard at all.

This pattern ranges from a child’s small to a men’s medium/large. If you need an extra-large men’s sock, just add some length. It is an amazingly adaptable pattern.

Have fun and send me some photos when you get done! I would love to see them and post them for others to see.
