The Sisterhood of the Travelling Crochet Hook: the creative process:2

by Noreen on January 19th, 2007

The first doll shaped Gulliver Hook was really wild and woolie, large and exuberant:gulliver-hook-travelling-sisterhood-crochet-hook-kusha-qs.jpg

She inspired me to begin the Sisterhood of the Travelling Crochet hook, and that has begun a  wonderful voyage of discovery for me.

Crochet is all about responding to intuition, inspiration, imagination and touches body mind and spirit deeply!

The second doll shaped hook was the seed for beginning a whole series of crochet hooks. She has undergone a transformation, as I have been crocheting wtih the Gulliver hooks.

She started out as a very robust hook:

It was important for me to give myself permission to explore crochet on a large scale, and to see what I would learn. There is something inherently playful about working with whalloping big hooks, and so, it forces me to move into more resilient places with it. Fascinating, and just plain fun!

BUT: As I was designing with the Gullivers, I found that I was drawn back to my roots of working smaller. So, I have been making more of the hooks in the 15 mm to 19 mm range. And, I have fallen in love with 15 mm size hooks.  A 15 mm hook is a very happy balance for me…..

So, my personal Gulliver (Esperanza is her name) has slimmed down:

and the very first hook that I carved from the marrotte,

ah, well, she became a Bee, and she too, has gone under the knife, the file and the sandpaper, and has slimmed right down, too….

Who knows where the journey will take me? I don’t know, but I do know that it is really important to push the edges, and find out what it feels like to take chances. It’s good to test the limits of what we know, what we like, what is comfortable, what we think…..
And, if it doesn’t work, then crochet a chain, and swirl it into a new safety net!

Here’s to creativity! Be brave…. it’s good for you…….

hugs all round,

Noreen
