The Sisterhood of the Travelling Crochet Hook: 8: Beginnings
A little time travelling in the Sisterhood of the Travelling Crochet hook:
When I was 18 years old, I was enchanted by my friend, Tish’s fabulous and fanciful crocheting.
I went out and bought myself a plastic crochet hook, and began a love affair that has lasted decades! Tish taught me the basics, and I was hooked for life :)
Not only did I find that my 10c crochet hook was an instrument of needlework, it was also a paint brush and a sculpting tool.
This was in the early 70’s and being a Gypsy at heart, I was soon crocheting wild and fabulous painterly garments, shawls, vests, coats, wall and furniture embellishments.
Nowadays, people call it freeform. I didn’t call it anything except pure joy. Did I photograph any of it? Nope. shucks.
I also found myself totally in love with the crochet of my Irish ancestors. I became addicted to crocheting lace tablecloths, bedspreads, trims and shawls. Crocheting lace gave me a sense of being at home in the world, through that ancestral connection. Believe me, this was profoundly healing for me!
I still have one of the tablecloths: In fact, here it is with the little plastic hook that I crocheted it, and so many other things with:

I wouldn’t dare crochet with the little hook, as it is now old as the hills, and probably waaaaaaaaaaay too fragile. I would hate to break it.
Do you remember your first crochet hook?
Tell the Sisterhood of the Travelling Hook about it, and about the wonderful places it took you!
hugs all round,
Noreen
