Spool knitted Worry Doll Tutorial - 1

by Noreen on March 31st, 2008

I’ve been avoiding writing about Worry Dolls for days,

while, at the same time, obsessing about them.

We live in Worrisome Times.

I bet the Middle Ages felt calmer on some days than the ruptious and distressing stuff that passes for the ‘daily normal’ on most of the planet right now.

So, if you are a worrier or a fretter, (like me) it’s good to find ways of soothing your ruffled and sometimes shattered feathers.

The hope is that you can then carry on with a modicum of grace and intelligence and be as effective a human being as is, well, humanly possible.

I think that most people make Worry Dolls really little.

Perhaps the metaphor is that we have to find small ways of puzzling through the great difficulties in our lives….

how do we cope with the worry about a parent whose mind has been muddled and ruptured by Alzheimer’s,

or a sybling who is travelling through a sorrow filled passage,

or a friend who is in deep fear about the lurking menace of life threatening disease,

and what about the fear for the unborn children,

and the anxiety for young ones that are already here, and what about stupid STUPID politicians,

and our poor little planet? YIKES!

?

Well, we find ways of calming ourselves down.

And, for those of us who live and love fiber, there is just nothing as good as a fine fiber fix. (Well, ahem, prayer and meditation are awfully good, too)

Besides, if you make a bunch of great little Worry Dolls, you really do feel better.

And, then you have great little gifts to give people.

You can say to them: “We’re all in the same boat, and I am here to paddle along side you. Now, where’s that paddle?”

Okay… so on to the

Tutorial for Spool Knitting a Worry Doll

by Noreen Crone-Findlay ©:

I started out by taking a tiny doll that I had made several years ago and measuring her up. She seemed to be the perfect size for a spool knitted Worry Doll.

I also grabbed a spindle full of yarn that I had spun from our problem furchild kitty cat, (use thinnish yarn, like sock yarn or embroidery floss), some vintage ribbon, and one of my favorite spool knitters.

Spool knit 2 cords on just 2 pegs. Don’t know how?

Here’s how to spool knit on 2 pegs

Make one of the cords 3 1/2 inches (9 cm) long for the Head,Body and Legs cord and make the other cord (for the arms) 1 1/4 inch (3 cm) long.
