Spinning silk to crochet lace, and spinning with a new lace!
I’ve been spinning up a storm with Maudie, my wonderful new to me, vintage (she was made in 1977) Mud Valley spinning wheel.
The other night (well early morning) I started in on spinning the silk for the shawl that I am crocheting for our daughter for her wedding next summer….. it’s the butterfly shawl that I designed for Knit.1 Summer 2006…. I blogged about it a while ago.
Anyhow……..
I think poor Maudie is having trouble adjusting to the dry climate (she came over the mountains from the wet coast!)
So, she popped her leather bootlace driveband! ACK!

I came into the studio, and was appalled to find it laying on the floor beside her.
I immediately blamed Rufie, who ran to his dad

and said: “Mum’s being mean! yes, I peed in the studio,
but I didn’t bite the tempting leather shoelace, honest, Dad!”
Jim examined the ends and declared them to have NOT been nibbled by small dogs or large ones either. (BTW, Rufie is doing GREAT! He sure gave us a scare a couple of weeks back! Whew!)
I thought for a minute about Maudie’s situation. And, I thought, well…….. I wonder…….
and I grabbed my winter boot, and hauled the lace out of it,
wrapped it around the wheel and the channel on the end of the bobbin, tied it up snug, and was spinning merrily away within minutes. (My boot is not so useful, but I’ve got some inkle weaving around here that will make a fine boot lace… and if I can’t find it, I’ll just spoolknit one up! And, luckily, I have another old pair of boots that will do for now).

Here I am spinning silk with the bootlace in place…….
BTW, I have spun a ton of yarn from the wool that our big old Newfie has shed out over the years. (He’s 13, and very old and walks by committee - the front end committee doesn’t always communicate with the hind end commitee, alas).
Spin spin spin
hugs all round

PS: Christina! I could have made a new drive belt with baler twine! LOL!
