Skulls? Crochet hooks? Spoolies? Yup.
The other night, Jim and I were watching a documentary on telly about the Day of the Dead in Mexico. It was wonderful!
The way that they explained it made it clear that the festival is one of embracing beloved family and friends who have died. And, it’s a mindful, meditative time for that night of being re-connected with loved ones.
Well, there is also a whole lot of sugar involved. Oh yes… there’s definitely some quirky sculpting of that sugar, so a sense of humour is important to add to the mix…..
Anyhow… I have been working on this neat little spoolknitter, and today, it made it ~very clear thankyouverymuch~ that it wanted to be a skull. AND that it wanted a crochet hook buddy thankyouverymuch!
What was I supposed to do? Ignore it?
Well some people might, but that’s so sane and normal
um… anyhow….. I had a wonderful time carving the hook, and painting and sanding and painting and sanding and painting the spoolie. (It wanted multiple layers of paint. What can I say?)
I glued blue glass beads into the eye sockets.
I read far too much Terry Pratchett to not give the skulls blue eyes.
I emailed the pic of my calciferous creations to a friend who works with a lot of skull imagery. She said: Yup… these work for me. Sold.
I like that….. I still have more skullie pals to carve. I can feel it in my bones……..
hugs all round,
Noreen

Very interesting…and different…and yes, painting anything white or yellow, requires coats of paint, it is the same with folk art.

LOL! Actually, the crochet hook is yours, but the spoolie isn’t good enough. It’s a great prototype, but Jim is working on turning ‘better’ ones….. :)
