Sister Bear: Teddy Bears and Sisterly love

For months, I have been meaning to blog about ‘Sister Bear’.
Sister Bear is the bear that travelled back and forth between my sister, Patty’s house and ours.
Patty had found her at a garage sale and couldn’t resist her.

She bought her, and gave her to me.
I named her, ‘The Blue Bear of Happiness’, and then immediately suggested that The Blue Bear of Happiness become a ‘Sister Bear’.
Here’s the inspiration:
For more than 20 years, Patty, and big sister Aleksa,
had ‘The Box’.
Every year at Christmas, and possibly at birthdays,
‘The Box’ was passed back and forth between Patty and Aleksa.
It was almost crumbling,
but is now treasured beyond measure,
so Patty did a serious repair job.
She loaded ‘The Box’ up with so much tape
that archeologists will probably dig it up a millenia from now.
‘Wow,’ they’ll say. ‘This is obviously an artefact of great value!’.
And they’ll be right.
And, so, just like ‘The Box’,
Sister Bear
came into being………
I gave her new eyes and nose, and a heart
and passed her back to Patty.
She flew 1000 miles to Patty’s house,
and flew back again,
having gained embellishments from Patty’s treasure chests.
Sister Bear flew back and forth
between us,
growing more dear,
and shamelessly tasteless in her finery.
When Patty was here last spring,
just before she began her palliative chemo and radiation,
her beloved ‘little brother’,
the love and light of my life, Jim,
took this picture of us.
I look dreadful in the picture, but it’s the last picture I have of us together, so that’s just fine by me.
I’m the one with the closed eyes and hair hanging in those closed eyes. :)

I was so sure that Patty,
and Sister Bear
would be flying back again ………
but that was not meant to be.
Patty is flying with the angels now,
and I hope she has an angel version of Sister Bear with her……
If you have a sister that you love,
you might consider sharing a teddy bear with her.
Sister Bear would like that……..
hugs

My sister works overseas so we don’t get to see each other often. This is a lovely idea that I’ll borrow! I’m quite sure that your sister has her own sister bear among the angels too. God Bless. Alicia
