Potholder Loom Weaving: Freeform Dolls woven on the Potholder loom

by Noreen on September 8th, 2006

When I was collaborating with elinor peace bailey on our book:

Storytelling with Dolls,

I knew, right from the first moment, that I was going to design dolls to be made on the potholder loom.

I went through 5 different series of dolls…. experimenting,

figuring, contemplating, exploring….

One series of dolls was a combination of spoolknitting and potholder loom weaving:

I loved all the dolls, but they didn’t work in the context of the book.

Then, one day, it clicked for me…..

I had a flash of intuition that I wanted to make all the dolls for the book very small, and flat and FREEFORM! It forced me to think waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay outside the box!

I threw away all my preconceived notions about how I was
’supposed’ to weave on the potholder loom. It was incredibly liberating and has laid the groundwork for all kinds of freeform weaving that I now do on the potholder loom.
And, I am totally delighted with the dolls!

We based our book on the Jack and the Beanstalk folk story, so I knew I needed to make a wide range of creatures: Everything from a tiny chicken, to a Giant, and of course, a beanstalk, as well as Jack and his mother.

I wove all the characters on the potholder loom:

Oh, except for the Harp, which I made from brass, wire and beads, and wear now as a shawl pin:

Of course, all the directions for making everything are in the book.

Have fun weaving outside the box! When you are willing to follow your intuition, and ‘break the rules’……. you can create all kinds of wonderful things.

That’s what freeform is all about! Hurrah for creativity, imagination and inspiration!
