Hankering for Yarn

Organize that yarn

by Noreen on May 13th, 2008

I’ve been posting about organizing yarn stashes

Here’s one of my most favorite book cases. It’s GREAT for storing yarn and stashes:

We found it at a garage sale. For FREE! The lady who owned it reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally hated it. (I didn’t ask why).

On the second shelf, I have a heap of yarn in wire baskets from a retired freezer.

They came from another garage sale.

They are good in that I can see the yarns and colors, but tend to latch onto one another and launch themselves at me if I pull on one of them without anchoring the others. erg. There’s nothing like yarn erupting when you least expect it.

Of course, the small dog ,who has mastered the art of extortion (I bite your arm off if you take this ball of yarn away from me without a piece of cat food…. grrrrrrrr) just loves it when yarn (and books) start ricocheting around the studio.

Yarn games! wheeeeeeeeeee!

The rest of the boxes, baskets and suitcases are full of workshop projects, new designs, paperwork and of course:

Yarn.

Organizing your stash is one of the trickiest things about crafting. You’ve found some clever solutions Noreen.

I too recycle containers that others caste off. I snagged an old nuts and bolts organizer from my DH’s workshop for bead supplies, 3 teak chest of drawers (why would anyone discard something like that?!) for patterns, notions and paper stock and baskets of all sizes and shapes.

I like this eclectic look better than an industrial-looking craft room like you see in the magazines. Where’s the inspiration in that?

We have regular discussions on Layers Upon Layers about how to get organized. No one’s found the perfect system yet, but we all agree that you’ve got to be able to *see* the stuff :-)

Ah! That’s an idea for the book case I brought home from the dump (excuse me, recycling center) the other day. Maybe not yarn, but fabric and scrapbooking supplies. I never have enough storage and organizing space.

    Hi Mary Emma
Excellent! You’re lucky to have access to a ‘recycling center’.
*G*. Where we live, you’re not allowed to take stuff out, only in. That’s silly!

Your new bookcase is going to be a source of delight, I am sure!

    Hi Cyndi
I agree! If I don’t know what’s in my container, it’s going to add to frustration as I search and scramble!

    Hi Eileen
Wow…. lucky you to have found the 3 teak chests of drawers! That’s an awesome find!
I’m a big fan of eclectic, too. ‘Recycled Chic!’
