Live Earth: Market Bags are a really good, green idea

by Noreen on July 8th, 2007

I was so pleased with the effort that went into creating the Live Earth concert over the weekend.  I’ve been working on environmental issues for decades.

As well as being a designer, I am also a professional puppeteer. I spent 15 years performing puppet shows to grades 1, 2 and 3, on taking good care of the earth.  Every day, I was out there,  with my puppets,  inspiring kidlets to reduce, re-use, reclaim, repair, recycle, compost and think green!

And, I am happy that our daughter, Chloe,  who is also a designer, and a blogger, is also a professional puppeteer, and yes, she’s out there doing puppet shows on taking good care of the earth.

Earthkeeping runs in our family! Our son and his wife are very keen on all manner of ways of reducing our impact on the planet, like solar power, wind power and bio diesel.  How neat is that? I love it.

One of the small ways that we, as a family, have  tried to be good to the planet, is to always carry tote and market bags.

I have posted patterns for a few of the market bags that I designed:

And a Goddess  Bag

and a bag in praise of mothers:

They are fun to make, hold a lot, and they help the earth.

I like that.

Earthkeeping is essential.

hugs all round,

Noreen

I started using canvas market bags around 1990 and am still using the original ones and more. Often people give the canvas bags to thrift shops and I’m always eager to add them to my collection. I have bags from hospitals I’ve never visited and schools I’ve never heard of. I’m shocked that I rarely see anyone toting their own bags to the grocery. I think that San Francisco has recently passed a ordinance outlawing plastic bags in the stores.

That’s wonderful, Clara! Keep up the good work! You will serve as a role model for other people, and that’s important!
