Hankering for Yarn

Holiday Knitting and Crocheting - Quick Projects

by Adelle Tilton on November 24th, 2005

If you wanted to make something grand and luxurious for someone this Christmas, you probably should have started it last summer and be close to finishing it. That sounds so organized! I don’t know if I have pulled that off more than a couple of times.

But there are still things you can do quickly and have the fun of giving a handmade gift. There are quick projects all over the Internet and in your local yarn shop. I found a wonderful treasure a few months ago, and I suspected they might have something special for Christmas, and they do.

E-Patterns Central is one of my favorite places to shop for knit and crochet patterns. First of all they are open 24/7. Being a bit of night-owl, this appeals to my sense of timing. Secondly, the prices are terrific! I can buy it, download it, afford it, and print it at my leisure. If I spill a cup of coffee on the pattern, who cares? I can print another one. All that is needed to view and print a pattern is the free Adobe Reader which most people have on their computers.

E-Patterns Central features patterns from “White Birches,” “American School of Needlecrafts,” “Annie’s Attic,” “The Needlecraft Shop,” and “True Colors.” These are consistently high-quality producing pattern companies, so you can buy with confidence. They accept VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. The prices are much lower than you will find in a retail outlet as well.

To visit their Christmas supply, I simply did a search on “Christmas,” so there are patterns for several kinds of crafts. Knitters and crocheters can pick out their patterns out quickly. I wasn’t able to isolate the search into just those crafts but this should do nicely. Most are quick projects and the prices range from $1.99 to less than $5.00. There are more time-consuming patterns, such as afghans, but you could always get a healthy start on a project like that, give it to the recipient, including a certificate to have it finished by whatever date you choose, and take it back. Just be sure you finish it!!

Happy holiday knitting and crocheting. It is so much fun. And don’t forget - when the season is over, buy the Christmas yarn that is on sale. You will be so happy you did next year and maybe you will get started in July to avoid the last minute shuffle.
