Handbound Book - Handspun, handwoven!
We’re spending a fair amount of time racing back and forth between home and the hospital, as Jim’s Mum is sick.
So, I really like to have portable projects to work on in transit, and also to work on while we are there in the hospital.
I had been thinking about the handbound books, and thought:
OH! weaving the covers would be great! So, here it is:![]()
A handbound book, made with handspun, hand woven covers, bound and embellished with spool knitted cord (also made with handspun yarn).
Last December, a friend gave me a Shetland sheep fleece. I washed it, bit by bit. The studio looked like it was full of clouds as the puffs of fleece dried- they were suspended and laid out everywhere!
I spun some of it up into a soft yarn, and then got out my potholder loom:
I wove 4 squares, spool knitted up some lengths of cords with more handspun, and cut 2 wooden boards to stabilize the covers:
Then, I stitched 2 squares together, with one of the little boards inside. I stitched the cord around the outside edge, and repeated this with the remaining 2 squares. Then, I stitched a spool knitted cord heart on the front cover. To shape the heart, I used the same process as in the
spool knitted heart friendship bracelet
I made the pages of the book in the same way as the original handmade book:
And, there you have it: A handmade book, with hand woven, handspun covers, and handspun, spool knitted cord to bind it.
:) I love how spool knitting and potholder looms are so compatible!
Mind how you go…. be well!
hugs and blessings
