Hankering for Yarn

friendship bracelets for adults

by Chloe on May 29th, 2006

I used to love making friendship bracelets as a child.  I gave them up when I had to pretend to be a responsible adult…  Until I found a hank of this stuff:

It’s hand-dyed silk floss from The Thread Gatherer.   I thought it could be an interesting project to go with my carved jde pendant I just picked up.

To start the project I cut the floss into six equal pieces, about a yard and a half long, and then knotted them at one end.  I prefer to work with the end securely fastened down, and in this case, all I had available was my knee:

The next step is to make two half-hitches around the second piece of floss using the first.  This is the first knot:

The second  knot goes right over top of the first one.  Continue making knots all the way across the row until it looks like this:

Here’s the second row being formed:

Keep on forming rows, until you get a 6 - 8″ long piece (or you run out of thread!)

The strip wants to curve into a spiral, but we’ll do something interesting with that curve tomorrow!

Oh, Khaled, don’t worry about typo’s! This is all about making neat friendship bracelets, not about being “perfect”!

    Hi Tiffany
Actually, it’s really easy to do…. just looks hard before you start :)
Warning! Making friendship bracelets is addictive! LOL! You can also make friendship bracelets with spoolknitters.
    Fun!

    Hi Tiffany & Khaled :-)
Don’t worry - it’s not hard at all! It does help to keep tension on the piece of floss you’re knotting around (not the piece of floss that’s going *across*) Once you get started it’s easy, easy, easy!

    Hi Chloe!
    and yes, I agree :)
Having the friendship bracelet anchored by pinning it to your jeans or a pillow, etc.
    is really important.
Don’t forget that you can slide a bead up any of the strands of yarn if you’d like…
just slide it up and carry on knotting.
    Fun! :)
    They also make great bookmarks.

Actually, ‘????’, when you read Chloe’s entry, you’ll see that she is saying that she loved making friendship bracelets when she was a child, and that she still loves making them now, even though she is an adult.
Friendship bracelets are wonderful, no matter what age the maker, or the receiver.
    Enjoy!
