Crocheted Wasp Nest
The other day, I posted that I was designing a crocheted wasp be gone nest
Well, it took a couple of test nests to get it right, but now I am pleased, and I hope that the wasps and yellow jackets will NOT be happy and will stay away!
By the way, my daughter was inspired by my crocheted wasp be gone nest to design a sewn one!
Check hers out: Chloë’s Sewn Wasp Nest
And, now, here’s the pattern for my crocheted version:

Wasps are reputed to be territorial. So, if there is already a nest in evidence, they won’t set up housekeeping close to a rival colony. Therefore, faking them out with a nest of your creation will keep the nasty little beasties at bay. We hope…..

Cut yarn, leaving a 10 inch (25 cm) long tail for stitching. Pull through last loop on hook.
Finishing
Place a plastic bag inside the nest and then stuff it with more plastic bags. Gather open edge of nest and stitch shut.
Stitch a key ring to the top for hanging.
Hang in a sheltered area. And let’s hope this works!

Got a question? What is a hdc? Judy

Hi Judy
hdc is half double crochet in North American terminology. In British terminology, I think it’s a dc. Don’t quote me on that, though…
I googled for sites that tell you how to do it…. and came up with this:

Hope this helps!

Vashti! THANK YOU! Coming from YOU… who are ALSO supremely creative, as well as being one of the nicest people I know, this means the world!
Thank you!
And, I really hope that these crocheted wasp nests will keep the miserable little buzzers away from our homes and yards!
(So much better that putting out poisons!)

Very creative and interesting, Noreen. Sans hanger loop, and with a neck (or stand) and festive-colored yarn, this might also substitute for one of those hat forms on which to display one’s handmade hats. Far more stylish than those blah styrofoam heads, methinks.

That’s such a good idea.
US hdc=UK htr (half treble)
I always use the ‘half’ stitches to confirm which terminology the pattern is using, as they are the only ones that aren’t ambiguous, but still show what is happening.
