Carving a Jane Austen crochet hook

by Noreen on February 2nd, 2008

I am a total Jane Austen freak.  I got addicted to Jane Austen when I was 11 years old, and I have re-read her novels hundreds of times.   I still have my first copy of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ that I bought from the book club at school.

I have designed all kinds of dolls in homage to Jane Austen, including a :knitted Jane Austen doll:

Sooooooooooooo………

I am utterly ecstatic that PBS is running a series on Masterpiece theatre, showcasing all her novels.

Persuasion  was brilliant. Perfecto!

Ditto for Northanger Abbey. In fact, it’s my least favorite of all her novels…. BUT, this interpretation was so good that I actually liked it!

A L A S…… I thought Mansfield Park was a disaster! They totally blew it…. they made a hash of the screenplay, (Fanny didn’t get sent home?!?!?! EH?!) and missed out on great fun by down playing and minimizing Evil Auntie Norris.  And, excuse me, but Billie Piper was utterly and hopelessly miscast as Fanny.  Pituey.  I thought it stank.

A N Y H O W ! ! ! ! !

I am sooooooooooooooooo excited about 6 delicious weeks of Jane Austen telly that I have carved a homage to Jane Austen crochet hook! I turned it on the lathe, and am tickled pink with it.  It’s my second attempt.

My first attempt did the exploding hook routine- kapowweeeeeeeeeeee!

but, the second one has me feeling happy.

Here she is:

Ah, Jane Austen, I’m your biggest fan…..

Noreen-I am another total Janeite, and I agree with you about Mansfield Park on PBS-PU!!! I have ALL versions of Jane made into movies and watch them over and over. I LOVE your crochet hook!!!

Let’s hope they do a better job on the rest of them. It was just stunningly dreadful- and made more so in comparison to the previous 2 stellar adaptations!

I am working on a Jane Austen spool knitter, too!
    :o) Yay for our Jane!

one summer when my DD had trouble sleeping at night, she played and replayed the 6 hour Pride & Prejudice until she knows all the dialog. During high school she heard music coming from the classroom next to her and when the classes were filing out, she said to a friend Oh, you’re watchin P&P and could even tell her friend where they were in the movie. Can’t wait to see a JA spool knitter.

Is it the PBS one with Colin Firth? That’s such a wonderful adaptation. There have been some really fun and fine ones over the years! How neat that she finds comfort and respite in it.

We’re both scrambling to catch up with a heap of deadlines, so we’re a little behind on the spool knitters. The Jane Austens are first in line!
