Combining yarns and threads to make ‘designer yarns’

I am always experimenting with combining yarns to see what happens when you take a simple yarn and put it together with other yarns.
For instance:
In weaving this doll:

I used Caron Simply Soft yarns. By combining Violet and Grape, and using them together, it adds even more depth and lusciousness.
In this doll, I used Caron Simply […]

Woven Menopause Fairy Dolls

August was a really rough month, as we were worried sick about Jim’s sister, who is (was) one sick bunny.

(Note: Patty died on October 1, 2006. She is remembered with tremendous love and boy, do we ever miss her!)

I literally buried myself in my weaving, spinning, spooling, carving and dollmaking. It was profoundly healing and […]

Potholder Loom Weaving: More 2 color weaving on the potholder loom and how to turn a ‘regular yarn’ into ‘designer’ yarn

To add a more ‘designer’ touch to a ‘regular’ yarn, combine it with sewing machine thread, sock yarn, crochet cotton, fuzzy nylon serging thread, even torn fabric strips. You can see the difference in the pictures below.
Here’s how to weave a ‘3/3′ checkerboard fabric:

To weave the 3/3 checked fabric, take one color around 3 sets of […]

I have designs and essays in them…. yay!Noreen

Guardian Angel Dolls

We all need guardian angels. I swear that ours were working overtime yesterday.
We had driven in to the city (we live in the country on a little farm), and were doing a ton of errands.
Falloooooooooomp! The old Fordie lurched, and Jim, who is one of those gentle souls who doesn’t easily get flapped, […]

Potholder Loom Weaving: Further adventures of 2 color weaving on the potholder loom

The easiest way to weave a plaid-ish looking piece on the potholder loom is to use variegated yarn.
This Butterfly doll has plaid-ie wings that were made just by weaving with variegated yarn. Easie peasie.
she’s from my book:

To make checked fabric, here’s another 2 color technique:

Warp the loom over 6 sets of pegs with […]

Dragons and crocodiles

People have been writing to me, expressing how upset they are about Steve Irwin’s death. I am deeply saddened for his wife and children. What a loss - it’s hard to see a vibrant bundle of energy suddenly end this part of the journey.
I hope that his work in conservation will live long and bloom […]

Good News about a beautiful butterfly: The Adonis Blue

Oh! I love good news!
I heard a brief report on the news today, that said that a butterfly that had almost vanished from the chalklands of the British Cottswolds, the Adonis Blue, has been pulled back from the brink of extinction.
I googled to see if there was anything on the net about it and found […]

Doll Shoes: First the clogs, then a red hat, and now, a teeny tiny purse: Oh my!

I remember when I was little, I often thought that being an only child would be great.
To say that I didn’t always appreciate my sibs would be an understatement.
And, now, of course, not only do I love my sibs to bits, I also dearly love the sibs I acquired by marrying the most wunnerfull man […]

The joys of weaving on small looms: The humble potholder loom

I absolutely love potholder looms. They’re portable, they are a pleasure to weave on (unless you get a really wobbly, twistie plastic one that lets you down. But, a sturdy plastic one can be a great pleasure!)
They are humble, simple little looms whose creative potential is totally under estimated!
I didn’t have one as a […]
