the perils of garage sale-ing

One of the most dangerous things about summer are the garage sales!
There are some wonderful old vintage crafts out there, especially when people go “what the heck is that?”. I’ve come across some real gems in garage sales and second-hand stores. Some of the vintage instructions can be really obscure, or assume […]

part two of ‘friendship bracelets for adults’

I promised I would post part two!
Now that you have the weird little spiral of knots (how is that going to work?!) we need to iron it to form a curve.  Curves work much better than spirals for laying flat on your neck!  The beauty of this pattern is that it actually forms a curve, […]

Geisha Shoes

Part two of friendship bracelets for adults will be posted later on today. I just had to share something that I came across yesterday though!
I went to the Royal Alberta Museum yesterday to see their new exhibit ‘Geisha to Diva’, which focuses on the life of the geisha & recording artist, Ichimaru.
There was an […]

friendship bracelets for adults

I used to love making friendship bracelets as a child.  I gave them up when I had to pretend to be a responsible adult…  Until I found a hank of this stuff:

It’s hand-dyed silk floss from The Thread Gatherer.   I thought it could be an interesting project to go with my carved jde pendant […]

hand-spun art yarns

I’ve noticed something interesting happening to yarns lately.  There seems to be a movement to create yarn that’s art, rather than a strictly utilitarian, plain-but-useful product.
I love seeing the new ways yarns are being created, whether they’re a commercial product or one-of-kind like these yummy ones:
Wabi-Sabi Yarns from Dragonfly Cottage
Handspun by Plucky Fluff
Or JennyNeutronStar (my […]

Part 2 of ‘Little Scraps of Yarn”

Yesterday’s post left off with the yarn & fabric sandwich pinned and ready for the sewing machine.
Before you begin, drop the feed dogs on your sewing machine and switch to a free-motion foot (if you have one)
I usually use a thread that matches the fabric in the bobbin and a contrast thread for the top.  […]

What to do with those little scraps of yarn?

I collect yarn because it’s beautiful, or unusual, or because I know it will work for a particular project. But what happens after you’ve made something and you have little pieces of yarn left over? I hate to throw anything away and so needed to come up with a creative way to use […]

Wedding Veils

Tis the seaon… although if you want to wear a hand-knitted veil on your wedding day, you probably should have started a year ago!
I think the most beautiful hand-knitted wedding veils I’ve found are Shetland knitting. These are spectacular works of art, taking upwards of hundreds of hours to complete (depending on the yarn […]

Spool Knitted Necklace

Here’s the finished sample project I made using the spool knitter from yesterday’s post. As with all my designs, this is my copyright.

I used a metallic blended yarn to make the spool-knitted cord and two different types of seed beads.  To make this necklace, spool knit a cord long enough to comfortably fit around […]

Clover Wonder Knitter

I recently got a Clover Wonder Knitter and decided to give it a whirl. It’s pink & sparkly, that’s got to be a good start, right?
It’s a spool knitter with two interchangable ‘heads’ that allow you to work with three pegs (for a thinner cord) or six pegs (which give you all kinds of […]
